Do you believe that wine and health are connected? In this time of increased concern about our health due to COVID-19, many of us are thinking more about what we eat and drink and how it impacts our health. Throughout recorded history, moderate consumption of wine has been considered beneficial to your health.

Recent studies say that moderate, daily consumption of wine improves your health by:

  • Boosting your immune system. The high level of antioxidants in wine fight against viruses.
  • Reducing coronary disease and stroke in women.
  • Lessening osteoporosis in older women.
  • Inhibiting the growth of bacteria that causes tooth decay.
  • Preventing age-related deterioration of eye muscles.

 

1550 BC

Egyptians published a Papyrus, Ebers Medical, suggesting wine as a cure for loss of appetite and great weakness.

460 – 370 BC

Greece’s Hippocrates of Cos advised that wine be used topically to dress wounds, as well as drunk to cool fevers and as a diuretic.

1st century AD

Greek and Roman physicians prescribed wine for a whole host of ailments including:

  • Clarifying the blood
  • Clearing obstruction of the liver
  • Correcting eating of bad foods
  • Restoring vitality

100 BC – 44 BC

Roman generals, such as Julius Caesar, recommended wine for their soldiers to increase their strength, preserve good health, and prevent dysentery.

476 AD – 1453

During the medieval ages, wine became a staple of the diets of European people. This change in dietary habits was one of necessity, as medieval well water was usually highly contaminated with harmful bacteria.  When mixed with water, wine was found to make the water safe to drink. Once reserved for the wealthy and powerful, wine was now necessary to the survival of millions of peasants.

1800’s Onward

 Many medical studies have shown a link between wine and health. Some findings include the following benefits:

  • B vitamins in wines
  • Assists vitamin A absorption
  • Polyphenols of red wine act as a cholesterol-reducing agent
  • Ethanol in wine boosts the potency of vaccinations

Wine related health claims, from ancient to modern, all are based upon moderate consumption which is considered to be from 1 to 2 glasses per day.  Plan to enjoy a glass of your favorite wine with your dinner each evening and you will be following the traditions of your ancient ancestors, boosting your health and well-being.
